Barr Construction is nearing completion of the contract to manage the fit-out of the new, purpose-built Waitrose store in Newton Mearns, near Glasgow – the first bespoke unit to be opened by the chain in Scotland.
Barr has been appointed by the superstore operator to design and deliver the entire interior fit-out of the 36,000 sq ft store, which is due to open on May 12 and will create somewhere in the region of 200 new jobs for the area.
As part of the Greenlaw Village development created by Gleniffer Estates plc, the new supermarket will be the largest Waitrose in Scotland and will be the final addition to the new large-scale retail area on Glasgow’s south side.
Waitrose already operates existing stores at Byres Road in Glasgow and Morningside and Comely Bank in Edinburgh.
Having already built up strong working relationships with other retail outlets, Waitrose is the latest edition to Barr’s growing portfolio of industry clients.
Barr’s Construction Director, Paul Griffen said: "This is an excellent contract for us and we’re very excited to be involved in the creation of what is to be not only Scotland’s largest Waitrose, but the first bespoke store built in this country.
"The works are being carried out to a very demanding programme, of only 8 weeks. The project is progressing well and we are ahead of schedule for the store opening in May."
Waitrose was eager to use a company that could provide local labour for the project, and Nigel Keen, Waitrose Director of Development, said: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with Barr Construction and to be creating more opportunities to use local expertise in the delivery of our first purpose built store in Scotland.
"The store has been designed to create a bright, spacious environment which will provide our new customers in Newton Mearns with a food shopping experience of the highest quality."
