Barr Construction Lands Ryanair Hangar Contract

Barr Construction, one of Scotland’s and the UK’s leading construction companies, has confirmed it has secured the contract to build Ryanair’s second heavy maintenance facility at Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

Earlier this month Ryanair, the world’s largest international scheduled airline, announced that, with support from the Scottish Government through Scottish Enterprise, it was to invest £8 million in building a new hangar to service Ryanair’s fleet of more than 200 aircraft.

Work on the three-bay, 6600 sq m hangar, which will support 200 jobs, has already started on-site and it is due to open in September 2010.

Barclay Chalmers, managing director of Barr Construction, said: “This is a significant contract for Barr and as an Ayrshire company we’re delighted to be able to benefit from Ryanair’s decision to build the second heavy maintenance hangar at Prestwick.

“The design and layout is obviously a proven formula for Ryanair and allows us to be competitive and achieve a cost effective solution for all. This contract will also enable us to continue our involvement in the on-going upgrade of Prestwick Airport, having completed late last year the expansion and refurbishment of the PIK departure lounge”

Michael Hickey, engineering director at Ryanair, added:  “Following a competitive and detailed tendering process with some of the major construction companies capable of delivering on Ryanair’s exacting requirements, we are delighted to be working with Barr to construct a cost effective and efficient hangar in a timely manner that will allow up to 200 high tech, well paid jobs to be created from September this year “
