Barr Ensures Carnegie Legacy Endures

Barr Construction has been awarded a £11 million contract by Fife Council to oversee the refurbishment of the Carnegie Leisure Centre in Dunfermline.

The project is part of Fife Council’s £50 million investment programme to improve sport and leisure facilities across the region, and it has also received £1.1 million towards the development from Sportscotland.

The centre was funded as a gift to his native town by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and was first opened in 1905. It will undergo a complete renovation both internally and externally and is set for completion at the end of 2010, with an anticipated public opening in 2011.

Barr will modernise the building, while taking care to preserve the original features of the Edwardian structure. The refurbished centre will include a fresh reception area, new changing facilities and an upgraded sports hall. A state of the art gym is also to be created along with two purpose-built aerobic studios.

Barclay Chalmers of Barr Construction, said: “This is a significant project for Barr and already we have overcome many of the difficulties we have encountered to do with access restrictions. When completed, the community will enjoy a much-improved facility.”

Ed Watson, chief executive of Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, which manages and operates Carnegie Leisure Centre, added: “Carnegie will deliver a long term sporting legacy to the community and we look forward to operating what will be a state of the art leisure centre upon completion of the project.”
