Schoolchildren returning for the start of the 2009/10 academic at Woodburn Primary, Bonnyrigg Primary and Cuiken Primary in Midlothian were greeted with brand new premises, all of which had completed by Barr.
Midlothian Council awarded Barr the £25 million Midlothian ‘Schools Plus’ contract in September 2007 and Barr was tasked with managing the pre-construction phase and obtaining planning permission for the work.
Work on the schools in Penicuik, Bonnyrigg and Dalkeith started on-site in June 2008 and finished just as the schools broke up for their summer break earlier this year.
Barr’s project managers Michael Braiden, Kevin Young and Andy Pennell worked on the buildings with RMJM architects, civil and structural engineers Goodson Associates and M&E engineers Hawthorne Boyle. Hardies Project Managers represented the council during the construction phase.
The three single storey primary schools are all similarly designed, although the floor areas vary between 3,000 and 4,500 square metres. Underground heating systems were installed in each and the buildings are ventilated through natural ventilators set within the roof.
Barclay Chalmers, managing director of Barr Construction, said: “Both the Council and the schools are delighted with their new buildings and Barr was congratulated on the design, delivery and quality of the finished products. The children were given a tour of their new schools and were equally thrilled, a rewarding bonus for the project managers involved.
“The project partners were selected by Barr, and we worked well together to get the schools completed on time and within budget. These new build schools will provide children in Midlothian with an ideal facility to kick-start their education.”
