Barr Construction, one of the UK’s leading construction companies, has secured a series of contracts totalling in excess of £13 million for three new Tesco stores in Scotland.
Work is already underway on the three stores in Lesmahgow, South Lanarkshire; Tain, Rosshire; and Banchory, Kincardineshire. Barr is constructing a new 35,730 sq ft eco-friendly timber clad store in Lesmahagow. Set for completion in November 2010, the store will incorporate a range of green technologies including wind catchers on the roof and a combined heat and power unit, both of which will help reduce the store’s carbon footprint.
Barr is also constructing a new 45,000 sq ft Tesco eco-superstore in Banchory. The building will incorporate sun pipes and a northern light which will allow natural light into the building, and it is set to open in November 2010.
The third contract is for a new 28,000 sq ft store in Tain which is also set to open in November 2010.
Barclay Chalmers, managing director of Barr Construction, said: "Despite the challenging economic conditions, our retail unit has performed extremely well throughout 2010 and these contracts will bolster what is already a strong order book.
"We have always enjoyed a close working relationship with Tesco and our focus in the coming months will be on delivering all three stores on-time and on-budget."
Barr has been retained as part of the Tesco supply chain for over 20 years and in this time has completed in excess of 100 projects for the retailer across the UK.
Earlier this year Barr Construction announced it had secured two multi-million pound contracts from Tesco to construct a new store in Middlesex and a replacement store at Musselburgh, East Lothian.
Barr’s Retail Unit was awarded the design and build contract from Tesco to construct the new store in Yiewsley, Middlesex and began work on-site in March this year. Due to complete in mid 2011, the new 70,000 sq ft Tesco will also feature two blocks of 12 residential apartments.
To maximise space on site the new store will feature a mezzanine floor, elevated on stilts to allow for underground car parking. The residential components will comprise one and two bedroom apartments and will be positioned at the rear of the Tesco store.
