Fernhill Work Gets Under Way

THE FIRST sod was cut last week at the site for the new £5.2m community facility for Fernhill.

Responding to the needs of the local community, this modern, multi-use centre will replace the existing Fernhill Pavilion.

Barr Construction are set to begin work this month on the new facility which is scheduled to be completed by winter next year.

The new facility will offer:

l A main hall supported with dedicated kitchen and bar facilities.

lAn inviting entrance area with relaxed seating.

lFlexible committee rooms suitable for meetings.

lTraining and crèche activities

lYouth area.

lA seven-a-side all weather, floodlit football pitch and changing facilities.

Councillor Gerry Convery, chairman of the community resources committee, said: “South Lanarkshire Council, together with the Community Regeneration Partnership’s Fairer Scotland Fund, have fully funded this new £5.2m project which will be a great facility for the people of Fernhill and is another in the line of very successful new community facilities throughout South Lanarkshire.

“I am sure the people of Fernhill and the surrounding area will be delighted with their new facility when it is completed next year.”

Barr Construction managing director Barclay Chalmers said: “We at Barr Construction are delighted to have been appointed as the main contractor for the new Fernhill integrated community facility and look forward to commencing work later this month.

“We are very pleased to be working together again with South Lanarkshire Council on such an important community project and to delivering an outstanding facility which will be available by this time next year.”

It is also expected that the West of Scotland Housing Association will start work on 96 new homes.

Once the old pavilion is bulldozed in September next year, plans are in place for 20 new council homes and four new shop units on the site.

West of Scotland Housing Association will design the new homes, with the work going out to tender once the design work is complete.

The work is expected to cost £2.2million, with £½m coming from a Scottish Government grant.

Councillors gave the go-ahead for the process to begin at a recent Housing and Technical Resources Committee meeting.

They were also told that good progress had been made on the overall project, with 199 out of 336 flats earmarked for demolition having already been brought down while the first phase of 62 new homes had already been built and occupied.

It is expected that land for 96 homes will be transferred to the housing association this month.

The 21-month development will provide 82 new homes for rent and 15 homes for shared equity sale.
