Girvans Green Hospital nears completion

Work is well underway on the new eco-friendly Girvan Community Hospital and it remains on schedule to complete in February 2010.

Ayrshire and Arran Health Board appointed Barr as the main contractor for the £15 million project at Bridgefield in 2008, with work starting on the greenfield site in August last year.

The project will improve the quality of medical services available to local people in Girvan and the surrounding areas and will include two GP practices, in-patient accommodation, a rehabilitation unit, an out-patients department and a minor injuries unit.

It will also be home to the Scottish Ambulance Service and South Ayrshire Council’s social services department.

The single storey building, which was designed by Austin-Smith:Lord LLP, has achieved a BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) rating of ‘very good’ and includes sustainable features such as a wind turbine to generate electricity. Biomass boilers will burn wood pellets to produce energy and a rainwater harvesting system has also been installed.

Barr has used a wide range of materials in the construction of the building including a structural timber kit, feature curtain walling and nordan windows. The hospital will benefit from zinc cladding, tiled and sarnafil roofing and rainscreen cladding. The overall effect is a modern, sharp building.

Bill Williamson, project manager at Barr, said: “The local community has been consulted at various stages throughout the design and build of the hospital and we are proud of the part we are playing in providing this much-needed facility for the people of South Ayrshire.”
