Retail Unit Adds New Stores

It has been a busy year for Barr’s Retail Unit which has completed a number of significant projects and received some awards along the way.

Barr delivered Tesco’s first environmental format store in Scotland ahead of schedule in June. The 40,000 sq ft store in Dumfries features a number of innovative energy saving initiatives, such as wind catchers that provide untreated ventilation and roof lights and ribbon windows which allow natural light to stream into the building.

Led by project manager Alan Wilkinson, the Barr team responsible for the Dumfries project was praised for its efforts to engage with the local community, after it hosted a number of site visits by local school children.

A real team effort also ensured that Tesco’s 60,000 sq ft Extra store in Kilmarnock opened ahead of schedule in May 2009. Barr’s Retail Architectural team was responsible for the design of the building, while Barr Surfacing and Civil Engineering carried out the highways and car park surfacing. Solway Steel also worked on-site along with Solway Pre-cast.

To encourage best practise both Tesco stores were registered with the Considerate Contractors Scheme (CCS) and both were presented with awards from Tesco in recognition of their efforts.

On-going projects include work on the extension to Tesco Corstorphine, Edinburgh and the Tesco Express programme. Barr was one of five contractors appointed to work on the 200 Tesco Express stores which are scheduled for completion in March 2010.

Barr Retail has also been appointed as a main contractor by Sainsburys. Three contracts have already been completed in central Scotland including Selkirk, Denny and Kinross, and a number of new contracts are currently in the planning and preparatory stages.

Gordon Eccleston of Barr Retail said: “As with many other contractors, the last year has been rather turbulent for Barr however we are responding well to the challenges and are pleased to have been able to expand our portfolio."

“The Tesco Express contracts are a substantial piece of work and of course Barr’s appointment as one of the main contractors for Sainsburys is welcomed by all.”
