Barr is celebrating after completing two of Scotland’s most prestigious sporting developments.
Barr was awarded the £23 million design and build contract for the Stirling Sports Village by Stirling Council in 2007. Situated on the banks of the River Forth, the village is the largest single development for sport and leisure in the city for over 30 years and replaces sporting facilities such as Rainbow Skies and Stirling Ice Rink.
The project was completed in January of this year and the facility was opened to the public in March.
Known as “The Peak”, the sports village comprises six five-a-side pitches, a full sized rugby/football pitch, an Olympic and Commonwealth Games standard hockey pitch, three swimming pools (one of which features a moveable floor system), sauna and steam room facilities and an ice rink which will be used for ice skating, hockey and curling. There are also three separate dance studios, a gym, changing facilities and a bar/cafe area overlooking the ice rink.
In August 2009, Barr completed the £24 million Aberdeen Regional Sports Centre which was funded by Aberdeen University, Aberdeen City Council and Sportscotland.
As with the Stirling development, the Aberdeen sports centre was designed with the Olympic and Commonwealth Games in mind and has international-standard facilities, including a full-sized indoor football pitch. It also houses a nine-court sports hall, a 500 seater mini-stand overlooking the existing athletics track, a hockey pitch, two exercise studios, a gym, four squash courts and a crèche.
Barclay Chalmers, managing director of Barr Construction, said: “Both the Stirling and Aberdeen sports villages will play a key role in improving the health and fitness of the communities they serve. The state of the art facilities will also hopefully be used as training bases in the run-up, and during, the 2012 Olympic Games and 2014 Commonwealth Games.”
