University is a hub of activity

Staff and students at the University of Glasgow have been making good use of the new HUB building since its launch earlier this year.

Barr was responsible for the renovation of the previously disused 1960s block which is situated at the heart of the university’s campus. The building offers easy access to a range of student services over four floors and includes a bookstore, GP practice, a careers office, cafe and an informal work and meeting area for staff.

Unit director, Robbie Clark led the Barr team which worked on the renovation of the building with architects PagePark and interior design company Nomad.

Architects PagePark and interior designers Nomad were tasked with modernising the HUB, creating an open-plan, flexible work and social area for staff and students. The result is a well-planned, innovative lay-out which can also be enjoyed by the public.

Barr utilised the existing concrete structural frame, floor slabs and concrete cladding panels, saving energy and money which would be needed for demolition and transportation. A re-clad glazed frontage was put in place with two stone-end entrance pavilions adjusted to align with the side streets.

Robbie Clark for Barr said: “The University was keen to work with the old building and its existing structure rather than demolish it and start from scratch. This kept the project in line with its ‘green’ policy and allowed us to concentrate on providing a facility which was already there in part, rather than having to carry out extensive building works.

“Adhering to the University’s sustainable values we made sure we sourced our materials locally, this included natural stone cladding from north England, natural slate from northern Scotland and pre-cast concrete paving from central Scotland.”
