The new anaerobic plant is located within the ground of the Wm Grant’s distillery in Girvan. The plant receives the effluent from the whisky distillation process and treats it within 2 large basins. The treatment process produces a bio-gas which is fed to gas engines within the distillery’s Energy Centre. These gas engines produce electricity and steam: the electricity is put into the Grid and the steam is used in the production process.
The works comprised of the construction of the various basins, tanks and chambers required to facilitate the process. The main anaerobic basins are approximately 70m long by 35m wide by 6.5m deep. The basins are partially buried and are constructed from a combination of pre-cast concrete and in-situ concrete walls.
Approx. 3km of buried process pipework and a new two storey control building were also provided as part of the works.
