Middleton Arena was the first stage in the regeneration of Middleton Town Centre undertaken by Barr Construction with Tesco Stores Limited as Client. The three stages were firstly to build a new arena and sports centre to the East of Assheton Way. Secondly, carry out major infrastructure works in the area and demolish the old council buildings and leisure centre to the West of Assheton Way. The final stage is to build a new Tesco Store and associated car parking on the site made available by the demolition of those old buildings.

Middleton Arena was a very complex building designed by BDP Architects Manchester Office. It includes an auditorium, swimming pools, squash courts, sports halls, gymnasia, bars, offices and social areas. The building structure is essentially a steel frame with blockwork walls coming off heavily reinforced concrete foundations and swimming pool area at lower level. The final design involved coloured “pods” for different activity areas as demonstrated in the photographs and planning concept drawings.

Construction work started in late June 2007 and the building was successfully handed over on time on the 22nd December 2008.The building subsequently won an award at the North West Construction Awards in the ’Places for People’ category.
