Tesco Maryhill started on site during October 2010 after over a year of construction planning and cost agreement. It is to date one of the most complex jobs ever undertaken by Barr Construction’s Retail Unit. The development is being built on a site once occupied by Maryhill shopping centre, which is to be demolished to make way for the new development, and consists of a Format 50 store on stilts with car parking underneath at ground level. This development also comprises of an assortment of concession units adjacent to the main store. There are also accompanying road works to improve the access to the development as the existing layout is troublesome.

The single thing that adds to the degree of difficulty and complexity is the fact that most of the development is being built over an existing 8 metre deep void. This void is covered by precast slabs which vary in the loadings that they can take. Much care therefore has to be taken throughout the construction process and construction methods which are much different than that of a standard store. An example is the use of tower cranes which are not generally needed but due to slab loading restrictions are being used here.

The store and concession units are due to be handed over in mid November 2010 for opening on 30th November 2010.
