This was one of the flagship developments undertaken by Barr Construction. The retail division’s project consisted of a Format 100 Tesco Extra Store in conjunction with a large PFS and associated road works. There were also works to an adjacent climbing centre within St. Anns church. At the same time Barr Construction’s Stadia Division were building a new stadium for Warrington Wolves rugby league team.
Construction work on the Tesco project began in March 2003 with demolition and remediation works. There had been an old brewery on the site before and there were many underground structures which had to be cleared away.
The construction programme was achieved within the more complex and difficult part of the construction process namely the road works package.
This consisted of a large and complex junction to remodel and reconstruct on the A49, Winwick Road on the east side of the site. This new junction now forms the main access to the store and required to be completed to allow the store to open.
