This project for the Northern Lighthouse Board involves the refurbishment of the existing facilities including the replacement of the light and associated electrical infrastructure. The old timber workshop is also to be removed during these works. The Elie Ness lighthouse was built in 1908 by David A. and Charles Stevenson.
The main lighthouse consists of a 2 storey circular tower approx. 11m high with a corbelled, crenellated parapet. Adjacent to it, on the northwest side, stands a small single storey square tower also with crenellated parapet. Both buildings are traditionally harled with exposed dressings. The buildings are Category: C(S) listed within Historic Scotland's list of buildings worthy of statutory protection.
