Barr Construction, one of Scotland’s and the UK’s leading construction companies, has secured a £6 million contract to construct a five storey car park as part of the redevelopment of the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has appointed Barr to construct the car park which is the first of four scheduled for construction. It is due for completion in the spring of 2011.
Barr is working with Hypostyle Architects and structural and civil engineer’s Arup Scotland on the design and build of the modern multi-storey car park which will provide parking for around 700 vehicles and will include two passenger lifts for ease of access.
Barclay Chalmers, managing director of Barr Construction, said: "The redevelopment of the Southern General Hospital is the biggest single NHS hospital building project ever undertaken in Scotland, providing numerous opportunities for local people and sub-contractors.
"The car parks are an important part of the project’s overall development plan, as the provision of quality parking facilities is a key consideration for those visiting the hospital.
"On completion, the car park will be a well constructed, state-of-the-art building. This will mirror the new ’super hospital’, set to be an example of excellence in healthcare and design."
