Barr Secures Multi-Million Pound Tesco Contracts

Barr Construction, one of the UK’s leading construction companies, has secured a series of multi-million pound contracts from Tesco which will see it construct a new store in Middlesex and construct a new replacement store at Musselburgh, East Lothian.

Barr’s Retail Unit has been awarded a design and build contract from Tesco to construct a new store in Yiewsley, Middlesex and will begin work on-site in March this year. Due to complete in mid 2011, the new 50,000 sq ft Tesco will also feature two blocks of 12 residential apartments.

To maximise space on site the new store will feature a mezzanine floor, elevated on stilts to allow for underground car parking. The residential components will comprise one and two bedroom apartments and will be positioned at the rear of the Tesco store.

It is hoped that the new development will contribute to the regeneration of Yiewlsey and the surrounding area by creating new jobs for the local community and providing affordable housing. The project is also significant for Barr as not only is it the first mixed-use scheme it has worked on with Tesco, but it is the first time Barr’s in-house design team has undertaken the complete design process.

Barr’s Retail Unit has also secured a multi- million pound contract to construct a new 60,000 sq ft replacement Tesco store in Musselburgh. Barr will start on-site in February 2010 and is due to complete in mid October 2010.

Barclay Chalmers, Managing Director of Barr Construction, said:  “Having been part of the Tesco supply chain for over 20 years we have extensive experience in delivering both new build and upgrade projects, and we’re delighted to have secured the Yiewsley and Musselburgh contracts.

“Yiewsley is unique in that it’s the first time we have worked with Tesco on combining residential apartments with a retail unit. Our team is looking forward to starting on-site and getting to grips with the challenge of constructing a building which appeals to homebuyers, as well as being an appropriately designed retail development.”

Barr has been retained as part of the Tesco supply chain for over 20 years and in this time has completed in excess of 100 projects for the retailer. In January 2010 Barr secured a design and build contract for a new Tesco store in Maryhill, Glasgow. Due for completion in late 2010, the Maryhill store will also be elevated on stilts.

The company’s Retail Unit is currently overseeing the construction of a new Tesco store in Middleton, Manchester which is due to complete in June this year, and is extending another store at Deysbrook, Liverpool. Barr completed new Tesco stores in Newtonhill, Aberdeenshire and in Annan in Dumfries & Galloway and extended a store at Corstorphine Edinburgh at the end of 2009.
